Fashions Inspired By The Summer

By Janey Dike on July 25, 2014

Some of the best things about summer are the fashions that come with it. Bathing suits, lighter hair, shorter sleeves, airy clothing, tanner skin, sundresses and strappy sandals are all a sure sign that you’re deep into the summer months.

Even the fun environment that the summer season creates can inspire your outfits. Going camping, relaxing on the beach, eating fresh fruit, taking a dip in the pool, driving with the windows down … these types of carefree summer activities have followed us since childhood and allow us to wear clothing that’s more creative and free than the garb we wear during the rest of the year.

Even if you have to take summer courses, drive to a full-time job, or are finding that your summer calendar is getting much less free as you grow up, you can still encompass the spirit of summer in your style and appearance.

Put on some groovy sunglasses, beach waves, or some ankle jewelry and you might even be able to smell the salt of the ocean from the chair at your office desk.

Incorporate the beach into your outfit.

Summer color palettes can be bright and bold or soft and natural. You can wear the bright yellows of lemons, the pinks of summer drinks, and the aquas of the pool, or opt for the neutrals of the sand, the deep blues of the ocean, and the greens of the surf and seagrass.

There’s also no better time of the year to wear jewelry or hair accessories in a variety of tropical shapes (think Lilly Pulitzer): seashells, flip flops, sailboats, turtles, anchors and starfish.

To go hand in hand with any sea creature headbands or clips, add some volume to your hair with loose beach waves. Sleep in a couple braids and shake them loose in the morning, or use product and a curling iron or wand to create the look while you are getting ready for the day. This will give you the all-desired mermaid hair look.

To get more mermaid style, wear deep colors like shimmery greens and blues. Maxi dresses and skirts matched with crop tops can also act as your tail on land. Sparkly jewelry and silver bracelets and anklets will also make you seem like a treasure from the sea.

Get ready for an old-fashioned picnic.

Picnics bring to mind jean shorts, gingham patterns, white Ked tennis shoes, and beautiful floral sundresses. You might not have time to pack a basket and sit on a grassy hill during the week, but dressing for a picnic will lighten your mood when you take your lunch break.

Think about the cute clothes your parents dressed you in as a kid. Summer is the perfect time to tap into your inner child and wear overalls, jellies, and all kinds of daisy patterns. Think button down sleeveless shirts and bright colored shorts.

For your head, throw on a bandana, a floppy hat, or even stick a couple wild flowers in your braids (just like you used to do).

Capture the essence of a surfer dude … or dudette.

Who can teach you more about summer fashions than someone who practically lives among the sand and surf? It’s time to tap into your inner surfer (even if the closest you’ve ever come to surfing is boogie boarding).

Go with a somewhat boho-bummin’ it attitude that includes bright patterns and prints. Slip on some harem pants, hibiscus or island patterned bathing suits, and load up on some cute, breathable cover-ups and you’ll be good to go.

Since you won’t be wearing much if you’re in the sun, that means you’ll need to accessorize. Load up on colorful beaded bracelets or slip on an ankle bracelet that you can wear all summer. Bonus points if you make them yourself! To top it all off, add a pair of chic sunglasses to protect your eyes from the rays.

There’s nothing like combining your love of nature and the great outdoors with style.

For those that aren’t as crazy about getting sand everywhere, there’s always the beauty of simply being outside in the summer. Camping and hiking are popular activities as they provide mental and physical challenges in addition to a peaceful time away from the rush and stress of everyday life.

Getting inspiration from the outdoorsy types is a sure way to dress to impress this summer. Hiking boots and sandals like these can be used for everyday wear or for actually partaking in outdoor activities. For shoes that still capture the natural look without being actually made for the outdoors, try on a pair of Birkenstock sandals or TOMS shoes.

Practical yet flattering clothes will perfect this style overall. Look for simple, conservative shorts, baseball caps, aviators, jean vests and forest colors. For chillier evenings, a flannel shirt or a quarter zip fleece will keep you feeling and looking hot.
